Research Publications
Our primary focus at The Baird Institute is to encourage and fund research to improve the surgical outcomes and quality of life for patients facing heart or lung surgery. The funds we raise go directly to research that improves the surgical procedures associated with heart and lung surgery. Improvements can include less intrusive procedures as well as techniques that improve survival rates.
Below you will find a list of publications that our surgeons and research fellows have been involved in writing.
Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on the Impact of Preoperative Atrial Fibrillation on Short-Term and Long-Term Outcomes After Aortic Valve Replacement. Heart, Lung and Circulation 28:S92-93. (2019)
Introduction: This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the impact of preoperative atrial fibrillation (preAF) on early and late outcomes after aortic valve replacement (AVR).
Early Postoperative Outcomes for Aortic Valve Replacement Using Stented Versus Sutureless Valves Via a Full Sternotomy or Minimally Invasive Approach: A Network Meta-Analysis of Surgical Techniques. Heart, Lung and Circulation 28:S92. (2019)
Purpose: In the era of transcatheter aortic valve replacement, new technologies such as sutureless prosthetic valves and improved access via minimally invasive incisions offer a reduction in surgical trauma for patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement. It remains unclear whether a reduction in cardiopulmonary bypass and aortic cross-clamp times, or avoiding complete sternotomy offer improved…
Simultaneous Enterococcus faecalis mitral valve endocarditis, mycotic aortoiliac, and intracranial aneurysms: A surgical dilemma. Heart, Lung and Circulation 28:S91. (2019)
Mycotic aortic aneurysms comprise <5% of all aortic aneurysms, but have a high risk of rupture if not treated urgently. Concomitant valvular infective endocarditis poses additional therapeutic challenges in relation to staged repair. Current surgical recommendations for mycotic aortic aneurysms involve urgent repair, due to the high risk of rupture and associated mortality. The presence…
Minimally Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement: The Optimal Surgical Alternative to Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement? Heart, Lung and Circulation 28:S77 (2019)
Aim: Minimally invasive aortic valve replacement and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) provide aortic valve replacement by less invasive methods than conventional full sternotomy, with each method of valve replacement offering different benefits. This study aims to compare the perioperative outcomes and short-term survival rates of MiAVR and TAVI.
An Ovine Model of Mitral Bioprosthetic Valve Induced Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction Due to Systolic Anterior Motion of the Fully Retained Native Anterior Leaflet. Heart, Lung and Circulation 28:S74 (2019)
Aim: Mitral valvular–ventricular interaction includes the following mechanisms. 1. Chordal annulo-papillary connection preventing excessive diastolic dilatation. 2. Systolic closure of the valve during isovolumic left ventricular (LV) contraction causes shortening of the LV long axis. This effect “turbo-charges” the systolic function of the LV. 3. The diastolic baffle effect of the anterior leaflet improves laminar flow…
Frozen elephant trunk does not increase incidence of paraplegia in patients with acute type A aortic dissection
Poon SS, Tian DH, Yan T, Harrington D, Nawaytou O, Kuduvalli M, Haverich A, Ehrlich M, Ma WG, Sun LZ, Estrera AL, Field M, J. Thorac. Cardiovasc. Surg. 2020 04;159(4):1189-1196.e1 PMID: 31126657 Abstract OBJECTIVE: We seek to assess the safety of total arch replacement with frozen elephant trunk for acute type A aortic dissection in…

Subclinical valve thrombosis in transcatheter aortic valve implantation: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Woldendorp K, Doyle MP, Black D, Ng M, Keech A, Grieve SM, Bannon PG J. Thorac. Cardiovasc. Surg. 2020 Feb; PMID: 32217021 Abstract BACKGROUND: Recent high-resolution computed tomography studies after transcatheter aortic valve insertion (TAVI) have reported a high prevalence of subclinical valve thrombosis (SCVT), potentially contributing to increased risk of late stroke. We aimed…
