It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD, CVO, who died on 20 January 2026 at the age of 95. Dame Marie was a cherished Patron of The Baird Institute for many years, serving with grace and unwavering support before the commencement of our current Patron, the Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG.
Dame Marie was a great friend to our Institute and to many in medical, university and civic communities. Her life was marked by a profound commitment to public service, compassion and the betterment of society.
A distinguished psychiatrist, Dame Marie was a long-standing advocate for mental health, education and social inclusion. She made significant contributions to psychiatry, particularly in adolescent mental health and Indigenous health services, and was deeply respected for her leadership and advocacy across the health sector.
In 2001, Dame Marie became the first female Governor of New South Wales, serving with immense dignity and compassion. Her 14-year tenure broke new ground for women in public life and earned her widespread admiration across Australia.
Our thoughts are with her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched. We honour her legacy of kindness, leadership and community spirit, and may her example continue to inspire us all.
